THE Dress - eBay Success Story 2004

thedress

About 6 years ago I somehow discovered the crazy world that is eBay.

I had always loved going through my grandmother’s insanely large collection of “old” clothes and keeping my favorites for myself but when I realized that she had an attic full of clothes that could be worth pretty darn good money on eBay I asked her if I could sell the stuff she didn’t want.

I had NO IDEA what I was doing. I was 22. A new young mother of an infant. A wife of a college student.

I was definitely not an educated vintage clothing collector or dealer but I’m never short on passion so I jumped into vintage clothing selling with both feet and had a pretty good ride! I didn’t make millions but I did well, had fun, and learned a lot.

So I went to my grandmother’s house in South Dakota and literally grabbed everything (with her permission) that I thought was cool/funky/cute! That was my criteria?! I didn’t look at labels, fabric content, style, etc!

I had a friend model several items for me and then listed them on eBay for 99 cents each! I can’t remember how I described this dress but I’m sure my description was laughable. Something like, “cool black seashell summer dress”.

Something crazy was happening with this dress… it had about 10x as many hits and people kept asking me questions about the fabric and the broken strap? What broken strap??? Ha ha ha! You’ll see it in the picture but I didn’t even know it at the time! They also kept asking me about the label… and I would continue to reply,

“Sorry, I don’t know?! The label has been torn out!”

I was so confused… someone had mentioned something about the name SHAHEEN.

No clue. Never heard of him.

But I WAS at least smart enough to look him up.

And no wonder all these darn people were being such weirdo’s…

I had a VINTAGE 1950’S 60’S ALFRED SHAHEEN HAND SCREEN PRINT HAWAIIAN HALTER DRESS and did not even know it!

I’m sure the buyers were disappointed to see that I quickly edited my listing title to include the words “shaheen Hawaiian halter” but it sure saved me some heartache.

My grandma was over the moon and in shock when I told her the dress had sold for $160.

What a SUPER FUN way to start my eBay-ing adventures! :)

Stay tuned for more awesome eBay stories…
