Goodwill Outlet Review

So I FINALLY went to the Goodwill Outlet in St. Louis.

I was really really excited.  I even brought my gloves!

My overall opinion...

Meh.  I was pretty disappointed.

I really didn't have much fun... EVERY 20 minutes when they rolled out the new bins it was like Black Friday in the ghetto.  I actually never even got a chance to touch the items when they rolled out, it was THAT crazy.  I consider myself pretty hard core when it comes to bargains but I will NOT resort to pushing people and I soon figured out that is the ONLY way to get the good stuff.

Boo. Hiss.

All was not lost though, the walls were lined with bins that had books thrown in them and I was able to find some nice children's books for 49 cents per pound.

I also met a nice African man from Ghana who told me about his shoe selling business.  He and several other men go to the outlet every day and buy tons and tons of shoes and then ship them to Africa.  I'm guessing it's pretty lucrative.  He told me it gets very "rough" at the outlet.  He said that several times... I'm glad I didn't witness any fist fights, that would have ruined my day.

So will I be going back?  Maybe, maybe not.

Would I recommend it to my "normal" friends?  Never.

Would I recommend it to my hard core thrifting friends?   I'd say it's worth it to go once but you might be disappointed.  In my opinion there are way better outlets for finding treasures.

Yuck. I had a similar experience at the Goodwill Outlet nearest me over a year ago. I've never gone back. And, the prices were WAY higher than any I've read about before. Pbks were $1/ea, Hbks $2/ea! More than I would be willing to pay at a yard sale. Nuts.

argggg. they have closed all the goodwills by me and the Salvation Army and local charity have both jacked their prices up (60+ for coach shoes?) yeah i know they are expensive but they shouldnt be more than 25-30 at SalVal. its cheaper at walmart.....ill stick to yard sales. even those can get kinda iffy.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the GW outlet. I will say the first few times it can be intimidating. My store is pretty good about controlling unruley people. But, the shoe people annoy the mess out of me. I would say more then 90% of my ebay and consignment items come from there. Our prices are .49 lb for glass, 1.29 lb for shoes, and .79 lbs for everything else. They just recently changed the books back to a flat rate. They are .25 for paper .50 for hardback.

Sorry you had a bad experience. I love the GW Outlet near me. It has effectively ruined me for any other thrift shopping. We used to have problems with the shoe people, but mgmt put in place rules about pushing/running (you get kicked out for the day), but you still have your occasional bin hog who blocks you with their body/cart or throw things haphazardly in the bins. They change bins every 1.5 hours, which is addictive because just as you are about to leave, another bin change could mean a great find. I have spent a 9-6 there and walked away with "great to me" finds. Weekends are the busiest, so sometimes I'll do an evening since they are open to 8pm M-F. Did you find anything good for all your trouble?

I love the GW Outlet. I've only been a handful of times though, as it's about an hour away, but each time I've walked away with some cool and profitable things. Your comparison to Black Friday in the ghetto is spot-on though. It's actually rather depressing... are people really that desperate?

Well, I have yet to make it to the GW Outlet. I did go to one in San Francisco on a Saturday Morning and it was great - no unruly folks at all. But I discovered that the Sal Army by my house has "rag days" on Mondays and Wednesdays - all clothes are $1, jeans are $2, shoes are 50% off and everything else is 30%. Add that to my inventory from weekly garage sales and I'm keeping busy. The GW Outlet is not close to my house but I'd like to go just once to see how it goes ... Thanks for review!
